Lath-and-plaster walls are deceptive — they look solid until you start drilling and the lath splits along the grain, leaving you with a rattling cavity behind a perfectly fine front face. We mount through to the timber studs with structural lag screws and add a backing plate behind the plaster face for any TV over 50". On Bronte's beach houses along Bronte Marine Drive, salt-air ingress is also a factor — we use the same stainless-arm bracket spec we use in beachfront Bondi suburbs.

Recent: 55" Hisense in a federation cottage off Bronte Road. Discovered the planned wall location was three studs across with a deteriorating plaster face — moved 200mm to a sounder bay, two structural lag screws plus a hardwood backing plate, and the original picture rail re-fitted unmarked.
